What are the most significant landmarks in the center of Olomouc? What do the city’s house signs mean, and what is the history of the houses they mark? What was the original purpose of the ceremonial fresco hall at Komenium Elementary School? You’ll learn all this and more on the traditional guided tours organized by the Olomouc Information Center for this summer season.
The city information center has been offering guided tours, during which a guide introduces the history of Olomouc, since the beginning of summer. Among the traditional tours is “Olomouc in a Nutshell,” which introduces visitors to the main sights in the city center. You’ll learn interesting facts about, for example, Olomouc City Hall, house marks, and St. Michael’s Church. Tours are available daily at four different times.
Every day at 1:00 p.m., your guide will also take you on a tour of the ceremonial fresco hall at Komenium Elementary School, one of Olomouc’s hidden treasures, which is nicknamed the “Sistine Chapel of Olomouc” thanks to its unique decorations.
Following last year’s premiere, you now have the chance to once again set out on the “In the Footsteps of the Baroque” tour in Olomouc. On this guided tour, held every Friday during the summer holidays at 5 p.m., you’ll learn fascinating facts about Baroque churches and chapels, and the guide will also share stories about Olomouc’s statues and fountains. The tour will also open the doors to places not normally accessible to the public, such as the Chapel of the Body of Christ in the Jesuit seminary and the Chapel of St. John Sarkander. The tour concludes with a demonstration of the rare organ at the Church of Our Lady of the Snows.
You and your children can once again take the popular “With Ola the Cat Through Olomouc” tour. This playful tour will take you to 11 locations marked by the figure of Ola the Cat. At each location, the children will learn interesting facts about the city’s history and find a symbol to trace onto their game map. Once they’ve found all the locations and traced all the symbols, a reward awaits the children at the information center in the town hall arcade.
Free guided tours are available again this summer on select dates at certain churches in Olomouc. You can take advantage of these tours at St. Wenceslas Cathedral, the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, the Red Church, St. Michael’s Church, and the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on Svatý Kopeček.
