Open-air concerts in the square and in the park, the rhythms of flamenco, and—at the end of August—the three-day International Military Band Festival. This summer in Olomouc will be full of musical experiences. These will be complemented by an original sand sculpture on Upper Square, commemorating the 270th anniversary of the birth of W. A. Mozart, who spent a brief time in Olomouc at the age of 11 and even composed his Symphony No. 6 in F major here.
Music Evenings at Upper Square
This summer, Fridays at Olomouc’s Horní náměstí will be filled with music thanks to the seventh annual edition of the multi-genre music festival “Večerní pohoda u Trojice.” You can look forward to pop, folk, musical theater hits, and rock ’n’ roll—four times in total. The first musical Friday kicks off on July 31, and you can enjoy the last one on August 21. As usual, each event will feature two concerts, starting at 7 p.m. Performing on stage will be, among others, the well-known Olomouc musician Lukáš Mareček; Petr Vondráček and Vítek Fiala will revisit the timeless hits of Elvis Presley; Jiří Vondráček and the band Epydemye will fill Horní náměstí with folk music; and Bohouš Josef and his band Burma will bring their well-known hits to Olomouc. The folk-pop band Hodiny, currently one of the most prominent names on the young music scene, has also accepted an invitation to perform at this year’s “Evening Relaxation at the Holy Trinity.” The festival will conclude on the third Friday in August with soloists from the Brno City Theater—specifically Libor Matouš and Michaela Hasalová—who will perform well-known songs from the musical *Šakalí léta* in Olomouc.
The City Center in the Rhythm of Flamenco
The end of July in Olomouc will be all about flamenco and the 18th annual Colores Festival. From Wednesday, July 22, through Sunday, July 26, you can look forward to flamenco workshops, a sangria party, an opening fiesta, and—on Friday, July 24—a spectacular flamenco gala evening. The gala will bring together top artists from the contemporary Spanish scene on a single stage, artists who blend the deep tradition of flamenco with modern musical expression and extraordinary virtuosity. Of course, the festival will also feature typical Spanish cuisine, so you can look forward to authentic paella, tapas, fine wines, and refreshing cocktails.
Sunday Promenade Concerts in the Park
Summer weekends in Olomouc are traditionally marked by promenade concerts at the bandstand in Smetana Park. Every Sunday at 5 p.m., you can come here to enjoy swing, Latin, jazz, and folk ensembles. Performers will include, for example, the Olomouc-based Brass ToOLs and the group Sambal. Also performing will be the Plumlov Musicians, the Fire Department Band, and singer-songwriter Markéta Sýkorová with her guests. The finale of this year’s promenade concerts, on the last Sunday in August, will be presented by the Moravian Theater in Olomouc, which will perform songs from well-known musicals.
International Military Band Festival
The end of summer vacation in Olomouc will be marked by the 29th annual International Military Band Festival. From Thursday, August 27, through Saturday, August 29, military bands from Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Bulgaria, and, of course, the Czech Republic will perform in downtown Olomouc. The popular church concert at St. Maurice Church and the spectacular evening open-air concert by the Olomouc Military Band will not be missing from the program. An accompanying program will also be on offer, featuring, for example, a display by the Czech Army’s Honor Guard showcasing their equipment, uniforms, and weapons. The Community Center for War Veterans will be presented, and you can also look forward to a demonstration of military equipment from the Army’s ground forces.
