It has become a tradition for a sand sculpture to adorn the corner of Olomouc City Hall every summer.
The very first one was created in 2010 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Holy Trinity Column’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This sculpture was even entered into the Czech Book of Records as the largest sand sculpture in the Czech Republic at the time. It measured 5 meters and 26.5 centimeters and depicted the sculpture of the Holy Trinity from the top of Olomouc’s landmark.
Since 2022, the sand sculptures at the corner of City Hall have become a traditional summer feature of the city center. This year’s sculpture depicts Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and commemorates the 270th anniversary of his birth (1756–1791). The centerpiece is the figure of W. A. Mozart, accompanied by musical motifs. The base is adorned with flowers arranged in the shape of a musical score, and the entire work is now also illuminated by lights, which enhance its festive atmosphere.
Mozart stayed briefly in Olomouc as an 11-year-old boy when he and his parents fled Vienna to escape a smallpox epidemic. They lived briefly in the Hauenschild Palace and then in the building of the Chapter Deanery (today’s Wenceslas Square). In Olomouc, the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his Symphony No. 6 in F major.
