Gastronomic specialties, concerts by famous bands and, new this year, a competition of top chefs for the title of Tvarůžky King. The seventh year of the Olomouc tvarůžky festival promises gourmet experiences and a programme full of entertainment. On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April, Olomouc’s Upper and Lower Squares will be fragrant.

On the second weekend in April, you can hit the centre of Olomouc from afar. You will be guided by the specific aroma of Olomouc tvarůžky. The Upper and Lower Squares will be filled with dozens of stalls selling tvarůžky dishes as well as traditional regional products and produce. The main stage on the Upper Square will host well-known music stars such as Petr Bende and the great Rock & Roll Band of Marcel Woodman, as well as folklore groups dancing and singing. The Lower Square will be the venue for children’s theatre performances, concerts by primary art schools, a clown show on stilts and a breathtaking fireshow.

The main role of tvarůžky

The Olomouc tvarůžky festival is an annual showcase of original dishes made from this specific Moravian ripened cheese with a typical aroma. This year you can also look forward to dozens of vendors offering various variants of tvarůžky desserts, burgers and spreads. You will have the opportunity to buy tvarůžky in various shapes and flavours and there will also be an original souvenir stand. “In the Tvarůžky shop, visitors will be able to choose, for example, cheerful T-shirts, tin mugs and clothes for the smallest children. Of course, the popular tvarůžková praline will not be missing either,” says Jitka Lučanová, head of the Olomouc Information Centre, which has also prepared several novelties for this year’s festival in the form of gift items with a folklore theme and in the colours of the Olomouc tvarůžková festival.

Cooking competition for the title of King of the Tvarůžůžky

The best restaurants from all over the Olomouc Region will prepare dishes made from tvarůžky and six of them will even compete for the title of Tvarůžky King. In the chefs’ duel, Petr Heneš from Long Story Short Eatery & & Bakery, Tomáš Hochla from the restaurant of the Central Park Flora Hotel, Michal Duračka from Asado grill, Lukáš Velšmíd from Bistro Nro 66 and Bělecký Mlýn restaurant, Roman Paulus from Bistro Paulus and Tomáš Juřík from Bistro Helen will measure their strength. During the festival, they will perform their art on the main stage on Horní náměstí. “Each of the competing chefs will cook their own tvarůžka recipe during the cooking show, which visitors will be able to taste at the sales stands. They will then choose the chef they liked the most and mark it on a ballot paper. The chef who receives the most votes will be awarded the title of Tvarůžkový króál 2024,” explains Karin Vykydalová, head of the Department of Culture and Tourism at the Olomouc City Hall, adding that the ballots will also be entered into a draw, so if visitors leave their contact details, they will be entered into a draw for a weekend stay in Olomouc for two people.

The Olomouc tvarůžky festival is one of the biggest events in the historic centre of the city, not to be missed by locals and tourists alike. This year it is the seventh edition of the festival and it is becoming more and more popular every year. “Last year, the festival welcomed more than 20 000 visitors not only from the Czech Republic but also from abroad, and sold a record seven tonnes of tvarůžky. I believe that this year’s seventh edition will be no less successful,” summarises Deputy Mayor Viktor Tichák.
