Enjoy your spring break in Olomouc

17. 2. 2025 | Barbora Malínek Číhalová

Are you planning a spring break with your children? Are you looking for tips for short trips or maybe a long weekend? You will definitely not be bored in Olomouc. Children and adults alike will have fun here. And this in any weather. Come and see that even in winter Olomouc has something to offer.

For a walk in the city

Do you like history? Then you are here right! In Olomouc, you will find history breathing down your neck almost every step of the way. The city centre is full of historical buildings and architectural gems. Many of them have an interesting story attached to them. When walking around the city, we recommend downloading the TourStories app and using the audio guide on your mobile phone to explore a total of 28 stops. Among them are Olomouc’s churches, palaces, chapels and many other important monuments. With the help of GPS navigation, you will discover the fascinating history of the second largest monument reserve in the Czech Republic and get a glimpse of the normally inaccessible interiors, on your own and at a pace that suits you.

For exoticism to Smetana Gardens

Do you know what makes Olomouc parks unique? That you don’t have to walk hundreds of kilometres to see a lot, but really a lot. The Smetana Gardens are especially famous for Rudolf’s Alley, which is historically the first park space in Olomouc and where you can find the memorable Rudolf’s Oak and the Tree of the Third Millennium. However, the collection greenhouses of the Flora Olomouc Exhibition Centre (palm, cactus, tropical and subtropical) should definitely not escape your attention while walking through Smetana Sady. They are the largest and oldest in the Czech Republic and even in winter days they are full of exotic plants, cacti and succulents, tropical flowers and citrus. The greenhouses are open every weekend during February from 9:00 to 16:00. From March onwards, the opening hours are extended.

You can walk through Olomouc’s parks along the main paths in no time at all, but we recommend that you explore their side paths and nooks and crannies as well, and take your time while you walk. In winter, under the snow, the parks have a beautiful atmosphere and white silence spreads everywhere. In spring, you can look for the first snowdrops, primroses and crocuses in the grass.

For knowledge to the former military fortress

When the weather is not right for walking around the city, you can have fun at the Fortress of Knowledge – an interactive science museum of the Faculty of Science of Palacký University in Olomouc. Those who have visited it once will tell us that it is a place you will never leave. Both young and old will find something to do here. Four interactive exhibitions will take you back to 18th century Olomouc, introduce the fascinating water world and its inhabitants, train your brain and show you how light is created. If you like to try something really unusual, there is a gyroscope waiting for you, which is also used on the International Space Station. Its rotating ways will make you feel like an aerobatic pilot. And what you should definitely not miss at the Fortress of Knowledge is the digital planetarium. From Tuesday to Sunday, animated films await you here in the morning and afternoon, with which you can discover the universe and enjoy its endless adventures.

A trip out of town to the Olomouc Zoo

While you are in Olomouc, you should not miss the nearby Svatý Kopeček. It is only a few minutes away from the city by car or bus and is definitely worth a visit. Its landmark, the Basilica of the Minor Visitation of the Virgin Mary, can be seen from afar in good weather. A place of pilgrimage with a wonderful atmosphere and an omnipresent genius loci will enchant you. Children will enjoy the nearby zoo. The zoo is often busier in winter than in summer. Many of the animals enjoy the cold weather and the snow. And at the end of winter, you can also see a lot of baby animals. Some of the latest additions this year include a baby squirrel cat, an oryx, and the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe.
Olomouc Zoo is also the only zoo with its own 32-metre high observation tower, from which you can see the whole of Olomouc in the palm of your hand. And with good visibility, you can see all the way to Praděd.

Family fun in the water park and cafes

If you like to swim even in winter, let us invite you to Aquapark Olomouc. There are pools with various water features and attractions for children, as well as a children’s corner outside the water area. Adults can relax in the whirlpool or wellness area. And you can also enjoy family fun in the many family-friendly cafés in the city centre. And we have a lot of them in Olomouc! They offer great children’s corners to entertain the little ones as well as older children, so you can all relax a bit while strolling through the city. With a coffee or a dessert.
