Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud

(1856 – 1939)

World-famous Austrian physician – neurologist, psychiatrist and founder of psychoanalysis. He was born in Pribor, in a German-speaking Jewish family. During his childhood, the family moved to Vienna, where he lived almost all his life. He died in exile in London, where he took refuge from the onset of Nazism shortly before his death.

He stayed in Olomouc as a young doctor during the military manoeuvres in 1886. Freud’s stay in Olomouc is commemorated by a memorial plaque with a bust on the facade of the building where the café mentioned in Freud’s correspondence was located (today the Opera café at 21 Horní náměstí).
