Gustav Mahler

Music

The famous Austrian composer and conductor Gustav Mahler stayed in Olomouc from mid-January to mid-March 1883. He worked briefly at the German Municipal Theatre (today’s Moravian Theatre) at the beginning of 1883. In the foyer of the theatre there is a bust of him commemorating this period. Mahler lived near the theatre, in the house U Zlaté pike (today Café Destiny) on Olomouc’s Horní náměstí.

Olomouc was Mahler’s third conducting venue after Halle and Ljubljana in Austria. He stayed here only briefly, but his stay was so significant for the city of Olomouc and its inhabitants that in 2009 a bust and a memorial plaque were unveiled. He worked at the German Municipal Theatre from 12 January to 18 March 1883. Near the Upper Square is the house U Zlaté pike, where Gustav Mahler lived. Today there is a commemorative plaque on the house. The history of the opposite house with the Mahler Café on the ground floor is also linked to the composer. Mahler and his colleagues liked to go to the Goliáš restaurant (today the Czech Radio studio next to the Moravian Theatre). A walk through the documented places of Gustav Mahler’s activity in Olomouc could end in Riegrova Street No. 5/404, in a former townhouse with a German casino, where Mahler accompanied a song recital on the piano.
