Basic information
The modern fountain named “The Spring of Living Water of St. John Sarkander” is located in a courtyard of the noble Neo-baroque Palace of St. John Sarkander, next to the Chapel of St. John Sarkander.
The whole work is 6, 2 meters high and features bronze symbols, signs and letters.
Shells with gushing water are made of splendid hard granite with shades of green, blue, and orange.
The basic motif of the work is connected to the spiritual importance of the site. In the past, the city prison where Jan Sarkander was interrogated and tortured in 1620 was located on the site of the Chapel of St. John Sarkander. The fountain’s decoration emphasizes the irreconcilable conflict between good and evil. Evil is symbolized by snakes, while triumphant good and eternal life are symbolized by the wedges used for the crucifixion and Christ’s wounds that are perpetually cleansed by the sprays of Sarkander’s water.
