Basic information
Garden of Senses
In the Botanic garden there is a unique space designed especially for blind and visually impaired visitors.
The raised bed is wheelchair accessible, so, in addition to the visually impaired, also wheelchair users or mothers with children are able to reach it easily. About eighty species of plants and trees, aromatic as well as medicinal, have been planted here. Visually impaired people can thus perceive flora by smell, touch and sound. Names of plants are written in Braille. Plants and trees were selected to keep visitors safe from thorns or allergic reactions. The raised bed has been planted with thyme, lovage, sage, various kinds of grasses, windflowers, etc.
This green and fragrant project by the architect Ivar Otruba is just the third of its kind in the country. The garden also features a haptic path for the blind. Visually impaired people can get to know the Botanic garden also by a sampler of tree trunks near the children’s playground, wooden statues at Mill Creek, a giant wooden chess set, a wooden xylophone, a Georgian wooden sculpture, or pebble paths.
