Basic information

The original castle and later a chateau was the residence of the bishops of Olomouc. The chateau has exceptionally well-preserved interiors which have witnessed many important events. In 1848 the Austrian Reichstag gathered in the Assembly hall and the Tsar room was host to the Russian Tsar Alexander III.in 1885. The other gems of the chateau include the famous Chateau library with about 40,000 volumes of books, graphics, drawings and a music archive, as well as the world-renowned Picture Gallery with the Titian painting The Punishment of Marsyas (also known as Apollo and Marsyas), the most valuable painting in the Czech Republic. Next to the chateau there is the Bishop’s Mint. The chateau is surrounded by a magnificent garden. The chateau was added to the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1998.
