Get to know Olomouc up close – with a guide and on your own

1. 7. 2024 | Barbora Malínek Číhalová

Are you planning a holiday in Olomouc? Or are you planning a trip here? Good choice! Olomouc is the second largest monument reserve in the Czech Republic and you don’t have to walk hundreds of kilometres to see a lot.

The historic centre of the city will enchant you with its unmistakable atmosphere and monuments, especially baroque ones, are literally at every turn. Don’t walk with your head down, but look up from time to time. The old town houses in the centre have preserved their original signs and many of them have decorations that will literally take your breath away. In the parks around the city, you can cool off in the shade of the trees or relax with a book. And what about the streets of Olomouc… Hrnčířská, Školní, Kačenčí, Kozí and others… When you walk through them, try to stop for a moment and look around. The atmosphere of the past will breathe on you and it will be hard to leave. Olomouc is beautiful in every season, but summer is just summer!

A guided and self-guided tour of Olomouc’s history

Are you fascinated by Olomouc? Are you interested in its history and want to learn where beer was brewed in the city? Why does a black horse jump out of a house on Dolní náměstí, where a synagogue used to stand in Olomouc or what does the so-called “Olomouc Sistine Chapel” look like? Stop by the information centre in the arcade of the town hall and take one of the guided tours regularly offered during the summer tourist season.

On selected dates between July and September, you can climb the 75-metre-high Town Hall Tower, where you’ll have the city in the palm of your hand. The Olomouc in a Nutshell tour will give you an insight into the history of the city centre and the Behind the Gates tour will take you on a guided tour of Olomouc’s parks. When visiting Olomouc, you should definitely not miss a tour of the frescoed hall in the building of the Komenský Primary School, which is nicknamed “Olomouc’s Sistine Chapel” thanks to its unique decoration. And if you like wine and beer, we recommend a guided tour of wine and wine houses, which can be combined with a tasting if you wish. Young and old footballers alike should not miss a tour of Olomouc’s Andro Stadium. The guide will show you the press centre, the VIP lounges and you can also take a peek into the players’ dressing rooms. From the north and south stands you will be able to enjoy a beautiful view of the surroundings.

However, if you prefer to walk around the city at your own pace and on your own, we recommend downloading the TourStories app and enjoy a guided tour of Olomouc on your mobile phone. A total of 28 stops await you, including churches, palaces, chapels and many other important sights.

We count on the children

The offer of holiday tours of the city also has children in mind. Get to know Olomouc with them in a fun way during the game With Ola the cat around Olomouc. It will take you to ten places and at each of them you will learn a lot of interesting information about its history. You will be guided by the cartoon character of Ola the cat and it is up to you when you go on the tour, where you go and what pace you choose. The tour is designed for children as young as four years old and can be taken with parents, grandparents, older siblings or as part of a summer camp trip. All you have to do is pick up a game map at the Olomouc Information Centre in the arcade of the town hall, or at one of the other participating locations, find all ten stations one by one and draw the correct symbols from them on the game map. For all successful searchers there is a reward in the information centre in the town hall arcade.
