Olomouc Design Days is back. For the third time, November will become a month of design in all its forms. Don’t miss the workshops, exhibitions, lectures, and guided tours. This year’s program is once again varied and full of interesting events. There’s something for everyone.
The third annual Olomouc Design Days will kick off on Monday, November 3, with the opening of the Olografie exhibition at Studio G21. This is the first exhibition ever to present a cross-section of graphic design in our city. It is dedicated to contemporary artists as well as legends who are no longer with us, but who have had a significant influence on graphic design in Olomouc.
Other exhibitions during Olomouc Design Days will feature sculptures by artist Jan Dostál, the work of architect and designer Viktor Matula, and glass art by Michaela Spružinová. The Olomouc-based architectural studio mimokolektiv invites you to an exhibition showing how things, materials, and ideas can be given a second life, and you can visit Café New One for an exhibition of glass and porcelain in an unconventional concept.
Discussions not only about design
Olomouc Design Days will once again be filled with lectures, discussions, debates, and seminars for both professionals and the general public. For example, on Tuesday, November 4, the Science and Technology Park of Palacký University is preparing a presentation entitled Element Talks: Graphic Design in the Book Industry. The discussion will focus on the importance of graphic design in children’s, professional, and comic book literature and will also present, among other things, the graphics of Kočička Ola (Ola the Cat) and its author Martin Šilar.
On Thursday, November 6, MUO Central will host a professional seminar entitled Friendly City, which is intended not only for city officials and political leaders, but also for active citizens and all fans of friendly public spaces in the city who want to get involved in their cultivation. The program includes four lectures and three workshops focusing on light pollution, visual smog from traffic signs, and tactical urbanism. A separate topic will be delivery boxes in the city, which will be discussed by architect Jan Kadlas and designer and therapist of Czech cities Veronika Rút.
At the end of November, together with the Olomouc Region Innovation Center, you will have the opportunity to see what a creative center might look like in practice. From November 27 to 28, creative professionals, the public, and representatives of public administration will meet at a round table to discuss the future of Olomouc through creative professions.
There will also be an interesting discussion on how to retain water in nature with regard to functionality, sustainability, and aesthetics, as well as a discussion entitled Rational Architecture with the participation of Olomouc architects David Benda, Miroslav Pospíšil, and Lukáš Blažek.
Gallery in the streets
Following last year’s premiere, streets in the city center will once again be transformed into an open gallery during this year’s Olomouc Design Days. Throughout the month, installations showcasing the work of local artists and designers will be displayed in the windows of selected shops and businesses in the center. On display will be, for example, functional furniture from the LLukas workshop, textile products by Renáta Jančo and leather goods from the workshop of Alexandra and Robert Horák, hand-blown glass by Adéla Lakomá, and unusual functional glass products from David Valner’s studio. While walking through the city, you can also admire inspiring arrangements from the ecological florists KETKE and MAIRE Botanicals, as well as handmade jewelry.
The program also caters to families with children
Similar to last year, workshops for young people make up a large part of Olomouc Design Days. This year, the Olomouc Children and Youth Center, Miloslav Stibor Elementary Art School, FABRICKA creative center, and Geniátor.cz coworking workshop from Hlubočky are once again inviting participants. Not only children can make their own designer spoon, learn how to use light properly in photography, try working with a 3D printer, design their own badge or T-shirt with their own motif, discover the magic of animation, or prepare original Advent decorations. On Sunday, November 2, open studios will give you the opportunity to take a look at the work of Olomouc artists and creatives. In their open studios, you will also be able to try out their work and make something beautiful yourself.
Since 2023, Olomouc Design Days has been a joint project of the City of Olomouc, the Innovation Center of the Olomouc Region, and Palacký University. Its goal is to support and connect cultural and creative industries in the city and its surroundings.
