The last Saturday in January will be dedicated to Shrovetide in Olomouc. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can look forward to entertainment, dancing, music, and, of course, pork specialties, a fair, and themed decorations at Horní náměstí (Upper Square). This year, ice sculptures will also be part of the Olomouc Shrovetide festivities, and children will once again enjoy animals from the zoo.
The seventh annual Olomouc Carnival celebrations are coming up on Saturday, January 31. The Upper Square in the city center will come alive with music and dancing starting at 10 a.m. You can look forward to dulcimer music, the Hanácký mužský sbor Rovina male choir, and the Bobule vocal ensemble.
Of course, there will also be a traditional demonstration of butchery and pig slaughtering. This time, it will be provided by Hanácký Grunt from Unčovice. Pig slaughtering and carnival specialties will also be offered at the stands of the Poděbrady Restaurant, the Na Návse bistro from Skrbně, and Havlíček’s butcher shop. At the fair with regional products, you can find sweet cakes, caramel, honey, gingerbread, cheese, smoked meats, and spices.
Once again this year, Olomouc Zoo will bring cute animals for the children, and the Flora Exhibition Center will once again provide themed decorations and a photo corner. After two years, ice sculptures will also return to Upper Square during the Olomouc Carnival celebrations. They will be created by sculptor and woodcarver Marian Maršálek, who will use ice to create carnival motifs. The finished result will not only decorate Horní náměstí, but will also become another original photo spot for a while.
