New Year’s fireworks return to Olomouc after two years

Olomouc is once again awaiting the celebration of the New Year. Fans of light effects in the evening sky can look forward to a classic fireworks display on 1 January at 6 pm. The city’s management has decided on the traditional date and form of the New Year celebrations. The fireworks will take place in the Crown Fortress.

“After times of covid restrictions, we will celebrate the arrival of the New Year with a traditional fireworks display. This time the Crown Fortress will be the venue for pyrotechnical effects. After the extensive reconstruction of the Town Hall, we can no longer use the roof of the historic building for fireworks and the space on Horní náměstí is problematic from the point of view of safety. That is why we have decided to use a location outside the city centre, which proved to be a good location for the 28th October celebrations,” explained Mayor Mirek Žbánek.

The lighting effects, which will be visible in the sky for less than ten minutes, will be accompanied by a musical background. The first act will feature a song by Abba with the song Happy New Year. The second musical act will feature Queen and their lyrical song A Winter’s Tale. And the finale will be Disturbed’s Sound of Silence. The format of the fireworks display will be similar to the one people last saw during the October celebrations of the anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia. And it will be worth it, the organisers promise. The cost of organizing the fireworks will cost the city up to CZK 100,000.

The official New Year’s Eve midnight fireworks display has not been held in Olomouc since 2015, when it was replaced by a show on the eve of the first day of the new year. For the last two years, however, Olomouc residents have had to do without New Year’s Eve fireworks altogether. This was due to anti-epidemic measures during the period of the epidemic.
