The premiere tour In the Footsteps of the Master Executioner, or a guided tour commemorating the 460th anniversary of the arrival of the Jesuits in Olomouc, will be presented on International Tourist Guide Day. This year, it falls on the last weekend of February.
On Saturday, February 21, the Olomouc Information Center in the town hall arcade is preparing a premiere guided tour called In the Footsteps of the Executioner as part of International Tourist Guide Day. The tour will take participants through Michalské návrší, Hrnčířská, and Mlýnská streets. “During the tour, participants will stop at several places in the city center that are connected with the executioner and his craft, as well as places that disappeared with the reconstruction of the historic center. They will learn interesting facts about the hardships of the Olomouc executioner’s profession, where the Olomouc Záhrobí (Underworld) was located, and who and why haunts Blažejské náměstí (Blažej Square),” said Jitka Lučanová from the Olomouc Information Center, describing the new tour route.
The tour takes place at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., starting at the Olomouc Information Center. Reservations can be made at vstupenky.olomouc.eu. The tour costs CZK 100, and children under 10 are free.
On Sunday, February 22, the Association of Guides of the Czech Republic is also preparing a guided tour of the city in cooperation with its vice-chairman, Olomouc guide Tomáš Kryl. The tour will focus on the 600th anniversary of Olomouc – the royal capital of Moravia – and will also commemorate the 460th anniversary of the arrival of the Jesuits in Olomouc and the 280th anniversary of the founding of the learned society Societas Incognitorum – the first “academy of sciences” in Austria. Tours start at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the model of the city on Upper Square. The price is CZK 50, and you need to book your spot in advance at tomas.kryl@email.cz.
International Tourist Guide Day falls on February 21 each year and commemorates the founding of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations. This day has been celebrated in the Czech Republic for 22 years, and its main organizer in our country is the Association of Guides of the Czech Republic. This year, the association is celebrating a quarter of a century of operation.
