Olomouc has a collectible euro banknote

Olomouc has its first collectible euro banknote! It was issued on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Czech Republic’s accession to the European Union and its sale was launched at the Olomouc Information Centre on 1 May. So when you go to Olomouc on a trip or on holiday, don’t forget to stop by and pick up an original souvenir from the city, which is also an interesting collector’s item.

The first Olomouc collector’s euro banknote depicts a view of the Upper Square with its dominant feature – the Holy Trinity Column. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, and this year also marks 270 years since its consecration.

The Olomouc collector’s euro banknote with zero face value was issued in an edition of three thousand and can be bought for CZK 100 at the information centre in the arcade of the town hall. More than a third of the total print run was sold out on the first day of the sale, and several hundred more of this original souvenir are currently available.

The concept of euro banknotes has existed in Europe since 2015. Since 2018, some cities and major tourist destinations in the Czech Republic have actively joined the concept. The purpose of the euro banknote is primarily to promote tourism and raise awareness of places of interest across Europe. At the same time, these original souvenirs have quickly become sought-after collectors’ items, as each piece is unique thanks to its numbering.

The euro banknote is produced in France from 100% cotton paper used in the production of real banknotes and also contains some of the same security features as real banknotes – such as a hologram, microprinting and UV protection. The reverse side of these collectible banknotes is uniform and commemorates the most important European monuments.
