Olomouc is beautiful in all seasons, but summer is just summer! And this year’s will be especially colourful. Look forward to the Upper Square decorated with flowers, a sand sculpture paying tribute to the Holy Trinity Column, open-air concerts and new summer tours prepared annually by the Olomouc Information Centre.
Decorated Upper Square
A sand sculpture depicting a sculpture from the top of the Holy Trinity column, a floral decoration of Arion’s fountain and a relaxation zone full of flowers will decorate Olomouc’s Horní náměstí this summer. While the sand sculpture has been part of the city’s summer decoration for the fourth year in a row and Arion’s fountain will bloom for the seventh time this year, the chill out zone in the form of a green spot under the sundial is returning to the square for only the second time. “The benches for summer relaxation will be complemented by colourful planting of flowers and we believe that not only for tourists this year’s green point at the corner of the town hall will become another popular photo point,” said Lucie Bartovská, head of the Tourism and Information Centre of the Olomouc City Hall. Traditionally, since June, one of the main streets leading to the Upper Town Square has also been decorated with colourful pinwheels. This year, they are newly shaped like rainbow flowers.
Holy Trinity Column celebrates
This December, Olomouc’s Holy Trinity Column will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since May, a euro banknote with its motif has been on sale at the Olomouc Information Centre in the arcade of the town hall to mark this important event, and this anniversary is reflected, for example, in the offer of guided tours of the town during the holidays. “For this summer season, we have prepared a premiere tour called In the Footsteps of Baroque in Olomouc, which commemorates the importance of the Holy Trinity Column for the city,” said Miloslava Šinclová from the Tourism and Information Centre of the Olomouc City Hall. She added that this tour will also take visitors to places that are not normally accessible, such as the Chapel of Corpus Christi at Konvikt or the Chapel of St. John Sarkander. At the end of the tour, it will be possible to see and listen to the rare organ in the Church of Our Lady of the Snows. The main celebrations of the anniversary of the inscription of the column are planned for this year’s Olomouc European Heritage Days, which will take place from 8 to 14 September and will offer, among other things, expert lectures, a large open-air performance dedicated to this Olomouc landmark and special guided tours entitled In the Footsteps of the Makers of the Holy Trinity Column.
Cool August with Music Fridays
Every Friday in August, Olomouc’s Horní náměstí will ring out for the sixth year of the multi-genre music festival Večerní pohoda u Trojice. You can look forward to pop, folk, retro, chanson and jazz. There will be a total of four Cool Music Fridays. The first one starts on 1 August and the last one will be on 22 August. Each of them will traditionally offer two concerts. One at 7pm and the other at 8.30pm. For example, you can enjoy the concert of Tereza Balonová, who won the Discovery of the Year Award in the Czech Nightingale and Angel Awards in 2023, or Roman Horky with the band Kamelot. Standa Hložek and his son Mathias will also play and sing timeless hits.
On the last Friday in August, the Festival of Military Music is going to take place. “This year it will be only one day and without international participation. It will be held again in 2026,” said Lucie Rozbořilová, head of the department for the organisation of social events at the Olomouc City Hall. There will be an evening performance by the Military Music Olomouc with soloists Natalia Tichánková, Lukáš Vlček and Michaela Hasalová. The Church of St. Morice will traditionally be the venue for the church concert, this time directed by the Castle Guard Music.
