A stroll beneath a sky of lights, a ride on a Christmas-decorated boat, punch by the river where thousands of tiny lights are reflected, an ice rink under a starry sky, and a festive atmosphere at every turn. Christmas in Olomouc is simply magical. You can enjoy it every day from November 22 through December 23.
The Olomouc Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful in the country. Don’t believe us? Come see for yourself. The city center welcomes you with Christmas decorations and more than a hundred stalls. The Olomouc Christmas markets are renowned for their wide variety of Christmas punches, but you’ll also find great ideas for Christmas gifts, regional foods, and plenty of traditional handicrafts at the stalls. The Christmas tree on Horní náměstí will be ceremonially lit on November 22 at 6 p.m., and the markets will kick off with a concert by the band Slza.
A Sea of Lights and a Program for the Whole Family
Both squares in the city center will come alive during the pre-Christmas season with a cultural program, and every weekend there will also be cooking shows offering tips on interesting Christmas recipes. Fairy tales and a St. Nicholas show are planned for children. An open-air ice rink, just a few steps from Dolní Square, will offer fun for the whole family. Near the rink, you’ll also find stalls selling Christmas goods and something to warm you up. The festive atmosphere will be enhanced by light displays found in several locations throughout the city center, and a stroll beneath them will instantly put you in the Christmas spirit. And as Christmas Eve approaches, you can set sail from the Olomouc waterfront on one of the Christmas-decorated boats. In addition, every Advent weekend on the waterfront, you’ll enjoy a cultural program for the whole family, and in addition to mulled wine, you’ll also get to sample the best of Olomouc’s cuisine.
The History of the City and Olomoucké Tvarůžky Cheese
We recommend combining a visit to Olomouc at Christmas with Advent city tours. Every year during the pre-Christmas season, the Art Nouveau Villa Primavesi, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the “Olomouc Sistine Chapel”—the Komenium ceremonial hall, whose painted decorations are unique in the Czech Republic—open their doors to the public. The observation deck of the Olomouc Town Hall tower, now open to the public, offers an extraordinary view of the festively decorated city. And what would a visit to Olomouc be without Olomouc tvarůžky? You’ll find a shop selling them on Horní náměstí, across from City Hall. In addition, from November 19 through December 20, every Thursday through Sunday, the Tvarůžková Confectionery will be open on Ztracená Street near Pup Up, offering original savory and sweet pastries made with Tvarůžky.
