Olomouc and personalities
Statesmen
Wenceslas III., the only son of Wenceslas II and Judith (Guta) of Habsburg was crowned as the King of Hungary during his father's life. He chose Olomouc as the starting point of his campaign to Poland which turned out to be a fatal mistake. He was assassinated on the site of Olomouc Castle on August 8th 1306.
The Hungarian King Matthias, one of the most popular monarchs in Hungary, was very ambitious. Two major events link him to Olomouc - in 1469 he was elected King of Bohemia by the Catholic Estates in the city and 10 years later he signed here the so called Treaty of Olomouc. A memorial plaque at the Moravian Theatre in Olomouc Upper Square refers to this event.
Maria Theresa was the first and currently the only woman in the long line of Habsburg rulers on the Bohemian throne. She visited Olomouc twice. In 1748, she and her husband Francis of Lorraine visited the Hradisko Monastery and in 1754 she attended the consecration ceremony of the Holy Trinity Column. The Theresian gate, still preserved today, was named after her.
Franz Joseph was the firstborn son of Franz Karl, Archduke of Austria and governor-general, the brother of Emperor Ferdinand I. He ascended the Imperial throne in the Archbishop's Palace in Olomouc in the revolutionary year 1848. He visited the city several times later, mainly in connection with holding of military maneuvers.
