Olomouc is situated in a fertile area of Haná region, in a wide elongated depression of the Hornomoravský úval at the confluence of the Morava and Bystřice rivers. The historic city centre is situated on three hills of undistinguished shapes – the Wenceslas Hill, the Michael‘s Hill and and the Peter‘s Hill.

The Morava River flows east from the historic city core, joined by the river Bystřice here. The side branch of the Morava, the Mill Creek (Mlýnský potok), is lined with rocks up to 16 m high near the St.Wenceslas Cathedral and in the Bezruč Park. The nature reserve Litovelské Pomoraví with its protected areas of Plané loučky, the Chomoutov Lake and the natural monument Bázler’s sand-pit (Bázlerova pískovna) penetrates the northern outskirts of the city.

The Olomouc territory is divided into 26 districts. Some of them, such as Chomoutov, Nedvězí, Topolany or Týneček are separated from the city by fertile fields and are more suburban in nature. Droždín, Lošov, Radíkov and The Holy Hill are, moreover, located in an elevated position on the outskirts of the mountain range Lower Jeseník and the city reaches an altitude of up to 420 m a.s.l. here.
